Monroe County Federal Prison Scope
Federal Bureau of Prisons facilities are a nationwide system for people serving federal sentences. The Monroe County Facility Map does not identify a BOP prison physically located in the county. The federal destination system becomes relevant when a Monroe-area federal case results in BOP custody. Its place in the map is not proof that a federal prison operates at the county jail.
The BOP Inmate Locator is the principal public release-history route for a sentenced federal prisoner. It generally covers federal prisoners from 1982 to the present. BOP directs older-record research to National Archives channels described in its locator information. The period of coverage does not mean every person in any type of federal custody will appear.
- BOP custody
- Federal prison custody after the person enters the Bureau of Prisons system.
- USMS custody
- Federal pretrial, transport, and related custody managed by the U.S. Marshals Service.
- Released
- A BOP locator status tied to the federal imprisonment record and displayed release date.
- Not in BOP custody
- A statement about BOP custody only, not proof that no other authority holds the person.
County, state, and federal records remain separate. A Monroe County release row can document transfer out of the Sheriff booking. OTIS documents Michigan corrections. The BOP result begins only when the federal prison system is the proper source.
Search Monroe County BOP Releases
Use the official BOP Inmate Locator for a person who served a federal prison sentence. A federal register number is the strongest search key. When it is unavailable, use the name search and compare race, sex, and age. A shared name is not enough to connect a federal record to the Monroe County person.
- Open the BOP Inmate Locator and choose the number or name search.
- Enter the federal register number when it is known.
- For a name search, use the full legal name and the offered descriptive fields.
- Open the matching row only after comparing the identifier and descriptors.
- Read the status and release date exactly as BOP displays them.
- Check the federal court docket or custodian when the result does not fit the known case stage.
- Keep the BOP release separate from any Monroe County booking event.

The image shows the correct federal search channel. It does not establish that the subject of any Monroe County jail booking entered BOP.
The Monroe County released-inmate search paths should be used when the starting event is a local jail booking. Follow the held-for agency and court record before moving to BOP.
Read Monroe County BOP Results
A former BOP prisoner can appear with a release date and a status of Released. That is positive evidence about the BOP imprisonment record. It does not prove where the person went after release, whether another authority assumed custody, or whether the person also had a Monroe County booking. Keep the statement as narrow as the source.
| BOP display | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|
| Register number | The federal identifier used to distinguish the prisoner record. |
| Name and descriptors | Identity checks that must be compared before accepting a match. |
| Release date | The date BOP associates with release from its custody record. |
| Released | The person is no longer in BOP custody for the displayed record. |
| Not in BOP custody | BOP does not currently hold the person; another authority or setting may still apply. |
A future date must not be recast as an event that already happened. Read the current status with the date. If the person is still in a federal facility, the date can be scheduled or projected. If BOP marks the person Released, it supports a past BOP exit. Context from the federal docket may still be needed.
USMS Custody Before BOP
The U.S. Marshals Service generally manages federal pretrial detainees and prisoner transportation. A person can be held at a county or contract facility under USMS authority without a final federal sentence. At that stage, a BOP search may return nothing because the person has not entered BOP custody.
USMS does not publish a general public historical inmate locator equivalent to BOP's. The USMS prisoner information page explains the agency's custody and transport role, but the federal court docket and actual detention facility are better confirmation routes for a particular pretrial release. Counsel or the custodian may also be appropriate when authorized.
| Case stage | Primary route |
|---|---|
| Monroe County jail booking | Sheriff portal, release record, and held-for agency. |
| Federal pretrial detention | Federal court docket, USMS role, and detention facility. |
| Federal prison sentence | BOP Inmate Locator and federal records. |
| Immigration detention | ICE Online Detainee Locator and ICE help route. |
Note: A federal charge does not automatically create a BOP record; the person may remain in USMS pretrial custody instead.
Monroe Release to Federal Custody
The Monroe County Sheriff's portal includes USMS among held-for agencies, and county annual reporting says the adult corrections facilities hold federal detainees. This is a custody layer, not evidence of a BOP prison in Monroe County. A local release date under a federal hold can mark the end of the Sheriff's booking while federal custody continues.
To trace that handoff, first obtain the county release date and held-for value through the Sheriff's official lookup route. Next, identify the federal case stage. A sentenced prisoner may enter BOP and become searchable by register number. A pretrial detainee remains within the USMS and court path. An immigration detainee belongs in the ICE route. Do not send every federal-looking case to the BOP locator.
The Sheriff record can be requested from the Monroe County Records Division. Ask for the booking number, release date and time, release disposition, held-for agency, and receiving agency. The county record covers the county-created event, not the full federal file.
Older Monroe Federal Release Records
BOP says its locator generally covers federal prisoners from 1982 forward. For an older federal imprisonment record, consult the historical route described by BOP rather than assuming the search result is complete. The BOP locator information page explains the public record scope and older-record direction.
A missing recent result also needs context. Spelling, a changed name, an incorrect birth detail, or the absence of a register number can prevent a match. The person may have been in USMS pretrial custody, ICE custody, military custody, a state institution, or a county jail without ever entering BOP. Search the system that matches the actual legal authority.
Older-record research should preserve each identifier already known from the federal case. The full legal name, register number, sentence court, approximate custody dates, and institution name can distinguish the correct historical file. A county booking number is useful for the Monroe record, but it does not replace the federal register number. Keep both when the same person moved from county custody into the federal system.
If an ordinary Monroe County release is the question, the BOP locator is not the answer. Use the Sheriff Release Date search and Records Division. If a Michigan state-prison transfer followed a county case, use MDOC OTIS. These systems cannot be substituted for one another just because all concern custody.
Note: Preserve the federal register number when found; it is more reliable than a name for later release-record checks.
Confirm Monroe County Federal Releases
A strong federal release check aligns identity, agency, status, date, and case stage. Start with the unique number. Confirm that BOP shows Released rather than relying on a future date alone. Then compare the federal court record if the destination or legal meaning matters. For a Monroe County booking tied to the same person, keep the Sheriff event as a separate source.
No facility address or local BOP telephone is listed because no BOP prison was identified in Monroe County. Contact information depends on the actual federal institution or authority shown by the verified record. The national locator and the relevant federal docket are safer than assigning the person to a guessed facility.
A release from BOP does not establish final release from all legal control. Another detainer, sentence, or authority may take custody. Conversely, a person can be free of BOP custody without ever having served a BOP sentence. Phrase the conclusion in the agency's terms: released from BOP custody on the displayed date, with any later custody checked separately.
